Programming for Multilingual Learners
This webinar is designed for school and district administrators to help begin building effective, sustainable programming that enables MLLs to succeed academically. This is a 60-minute webinar with 45-minute Q&A. In this webinar, we will explore the options available in NY State to provide emergent bilinguals with the programming and instructional accommodations that best support the acquisition of oral English, reading and writing, and Home Language development. The webinar will be as interactive as possible, allowing participants to reflect on their own schools and districts. Topics will include English as a New Language and Dual Language programming, Integrated ENL-ELA, Home Language Arts, split-grade classes, and curriculum analysis. Participants will: ▪ reflect on the efficacy of their current programming for MLLs in their schools/districts and identify areas of concern; ▪ gain awareness around the language and literacy needs of the students, and the progression of academic language acquisition; ▪ critically look at curriculum, and the conflicts between tasks and language and literacy acquisition; ▪ identify programming options of interest; and make plans to discuss with their teams.
