Planning for Language Development 3-Part Series: Using the NYSED Academic & Linguistic Demands Document and the WIDA ELD Standards Framework to Support Multilingual Learners
Academic success depends on more than just content knowledge – it requires students to navigate the language of the discipline. How can educators intentionally plan for language development while teaching rigorous grade-level content? This three-part professional learning series introduces a practical planning process that demonstrates how the NYSED Academic & Linguistic Demands document and the WIDA ELD Standards Framework can be used together to identify the language students need to participate successfully in academic tasks. Across the series, participants will learn to identify the academic and linguistic demands embedded within standards, texts, and instructional tasks; apply the tools to plan for language development within units and lessons; and use both resources to develop aligned content and language objectives. Participants will leave with practical tools to intentionally integrate language development into everyday instruction that simultaneously advances content learning, literacy, and language development for all students.
